Frigidaire Refrigerator Sparking and Burning Smell in Denver's Highlands — Mullion Heater Harness Replacement

Highlands, Denver, CO September 2026 Frigidaire Gallery DGHF2360PF5A

A homeowner in Denver's Highlands neighborhood contacted Denver Rapid Appliance Repair after seeing a spark come from their Frigidaire Gallery French-door refrigerator and noticing a burning smell. Because electrical arcing and a burning odor can indicate damaged wiring or an overheating component, this was a situation that needed to be inspected before the refrigerator continued operating. Our technicians traced the fault to a broken mullion heater wiring harness that had been contacting the refrigerator frame.

What Is the Refrigerator Mullion?

The mullion is the vertical flap or divider between the two French doors on a side-by-side or French-door refrigerator. On most modern French-door refrigerators, the center mullion contains a small heater element designed to prevent condensation and moisture from forming around the door seals and the center of the refrigerator opening.

The mullion heater is powered by a wiring harness that runs through the door frame. Because the mullion flexes slightly every time the doors are opened and closed, the wiring in this area can develop fatigue over time. In this case, the harness had broken, and the damaged wire was able to contact the refrigerator's metal frame — creating an electrical short and the arcing condition the homeowner observed.

What We Found

During our inspection, we traced the problem to the center door mullion and its heater wiring. The mullion heater wiring harness had broken, and the damaged wire was contacting the refrigerator frame — causing an electrical short and the arcing condition. The heat generated at the damaged connection had already begun melting and discoloring the surrounding plastic on the mullion assembly.

The photos from this repair show the broken wire at the mullion harness as well as the heat damage caused by the electrical fault.

Repair: Complete Mullion Assembly Replacement

Rather than attempting to reuse the damaged assembly, we located a new replacement mullion locally from Dey Distributing. Once the part arrived, we completed the repair:

  • Removed the failed center door mullion and damaged heater harness assembly.
  • Installed the new complete mullion assembly with fresh heater harness.
  • Connected the new harness and carefully secured the wiring to prevent contact with the refrigerator frame.
  • Verified proper routing so the harness cannot be pinched or damaged during normal door operation.
  • Tested the refrigerator and confirmed proper operation of the new mullion assembly.

What to Do If Your Refrigerator Sparks or Smells Like Burning

A refrigerator that produces a spark, an electrical odor, or a smell of burning plastic should not be ignored. If you notice any of the following, stop using the refrigerator and have it inspected:

  • A visible spark from anywhere on the refrigerator.
  • A burning smell or odor of melting plastic.
  • Discoloration or scorch marks on the door frame, mullion, or interior.
  • A tripped circuit breaker associated with the refrigerator circuit.
  • Any sign of heat damage near the door seals or center divider.

Possible causes include damaged wiring, overheated connectors, failing electrical components, or wiring that has contacted the metal cabinet. The source should always be properly diagnosed — the same symptom can come from different components depending on the model.
